One Belton woman is scared to be at home alone, after burglaries struck her home earlier this month. Hers is just one of several areas hit lately by burglars in Anderson County.

"I've noticed people that have walked down here," says Bernard Jones who lives in Williamston, "Suddenly a day or two later we're broken into."

Jones estimates 10 homes in his neighborhood have been hit recently.

Anderson County Sheriff's Office tells us there have been 27 burglaries in the Williamston area in the past two months. That's up from 19 during the same time last year.

Sheriff John Skipper says an area in Belton is seeing a similar trend.

"We gotta cover each other's back," says Maria Cone, who lives in Belton.

People in Belton have had enough. Cone is helping to organize a "Community Watchdog" Group to help keep their community safe.

"We want to depend on each other because we think that force is the best force and we can help the Sheriff," Cone says.

The Sheriff's Office tells us they're investigating all the crimes to see if they're related. They're also identifying suspect vehicles and how many suspects are involved. They tell us they want people to be vigilant and report anything suspicious to law enforcement.

Williamston Police are also investigating two break ins in their town. Chief Tony Taylor says they're working with Anderson County as well to see if there is a connection. They're also increasing patrols.

Any community can set up a community watch group. Here's Step to Set Up A Group:
  • Find volunteers from your neighborhood
  • Hold a Meeting to Hear Neighbor's Concerns
  • Contact Local Law Enforcement To Report Any Problems or Anything Suspicious
